How it work?

1. Data collection

PESTOUT is composed of an UAV with thermal and hyperspectral cameras, enabling to collect information on the crop to be diagnosed in an effective and efficient way.

2. Data processing

To eliminate distorsions occurred in the process of information capture, and to adjust the spatial information to a given reference system.

3. Identification and discretization of tree units

Image segmentation is performed using a discretization algorithm, wich is based on K-means clustering. This program divides the digital images into multiple regions identifying crowns of pure trees to extract the characteristic of each object.

4. Selection and calculation of spectral variables

The calculation of the selected spectral and biophysical parameters is carried out by means of a calculation algorithm wich includes all the formulas belonging to the selected parameters, which is called a “spectral library”.

5. Health status assignment

Once the algorithms identify and calculate the trees parameters, based on their values, a state of health is assigned to the plant as well as the disease that affects it and its degree of progress. PESTOUT uses a Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) which is a previously trained and calibrated.

6. Health status map of the crop

Lastly, based on the discretization algorithms and tree-units spatial location, and the algorithm for calculating spectral variables and classification of health status, a map is shown by which the producers can take a look at their plantation.
